Making rain and reducing it (Technorati / Nara / Murty)

An interesting comment of KPR Vittal Murty (India) on my former posting :

“Rain making for the Olympics 2008 in China (Technorati / Nara)”

Comment:

“To reduce rain by supplying (injecting into the cloud) excessive condensation nuclei like

1) carbon-di-oxide & amp; NaCl (common salt ) ,

2) hygros (a mixture of sodium, potassium and calcium salts)

3) silver iodide  (AgI)

is now easier than creating rain.

The latter requires an optimum number.  The third process is costly, but effective if the cloud contains an ice-phase.  The number one and two processes are cheaper.  The second and third processes require an aircraft to inject by burning in the cloud, while the first process can be fired with rockets.
