Desertification in Canada

Published by sarah

Because of over farming in Canada and over grazing the land is suffering from desertification.  The affected areas are the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.  These provinces are prairies and 80% of Canada’s farmland is within these prairies.  200,000 km of Canada’s land is at risk for desertification.  This makes up 3% of Canada’s total land area but 42% of Canada‘s prairies. Hard working Canadians want to stop desertification.  They are doing a lot more than they were a few years ago.  They are trying to reverse desertification by mostly making Canadians aware of the problem in Canada.  They have conservation groups that explain to people at schools or in the community how to have their animals graze in a way that does not contribute to desertification.  They also teach farmers conservation farming techniques.  I think that desertification in Canada will probably become less because of these strategies.

I believe that desertification can be reversed or avoided in Canada by doing three things.  The first is to make sure that places in Canada that are not considered desertified need to be protected from desertification.  This can be done by teaching people to farm correctly and not overgraze their animals on the land.
