Yucatan Peninsula on Drought Alert

Mexico, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina)

Mexico’s Environment and Natural Resources Secretariat (SEMARNAT) decreed the Yucatan peninsula on red alert Wednesday, due to low levels of rain and consequent possibilities of forest fires. That governmental dependency informed that last year the country had an average rainfall of 16 millimeters, whereas until April 2008, there have only been 8 millimeters. SEMANAT warned that the danger in Yucatan is great due to the buildup of dry grasses left by Hurricane Dean, which hit the peninsula in August 2007.

The situation of drought affects an extensive area of Mexico, where reservoir capacity is now at 54 percent, while this month last year it was 63 percent.
