UNITED NATIONS, May 5 (Xinhua) — The UN Sustainable Development Commission began a two-week session here Monday with a focus on the global food crisis. The current session launches a two-year session “aimed at tackling issues critical for increasing the global food supply,” according to a press release.

Representatives from governments, civil society, agriculture, business and science “will look at many of the issues at the heart of the food crisis and will identify barriers and obstacles that prevent sustainable solutions to these problems.” Other topics at the 16th meeting of the commission include the effects of climate change and resource scarcities.

The commission was established in 1992. This year, the commission will focus specifically on agriculture, drought, rural development, land, desertification and Africa.
