COP9 Documents
New official reports and documents for the ninth session of the COP have
been uploaded onto the UNCCD Website in the last three weeks. They include
the Executive Secretaˇˇ’s report on the implementation of the ten-year
strategy, Programme and Budget for the biennium 2010-2011, the review of
available information regarding the financing of the implementation of the
Convention multilateral agencies, including the Global Environment
Facility, the Secretariat’s note on promotion and strengthening of
relationships with other relevant institutions and the background document
for the panel discussions during the high-level segment. To view and

UNCCD First Scientific Conference
The Consortium organizing the conference has released the tentative agenda
for the Conference, list of participants in the various working groups, and
draft recommendations to COP9 from the UNCCD First Scientific Conference.
The invitation to review the White Papers ended on Friday, 15 August while
the registration of participants not accredited to the UNCCD will ends on

The Second UNCCD International Photo Contest application closed

Over 1,200 photos were received for the second UNCCD international photo
contest. The jury currently engaged in selecting the prize winners includes
Mˇïga Sina Damba, Mali’s Minister for the Promotion of Women, Youth and
Family, world-renown photographer Michael Martin, Jürgen Nakoff, Editor of
the Germany’s National Geographic and French environmentalist Nicolas
Hulot. The results of the contest will be announced by end of August 2009.
The award ceremony for winning photos will also take place in Argentina,
Buenos Aires, during the ninth session of the Conference of the Parties of
the UNCCD. The winning photos will also be exhibited at the COP9 venue. For

Book launch, “African Drylands Commodity Atlas”

The UNCCD secretariat, the Common Fund For Commodities (CFC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have launched the first African Drylands Commodity Atlas. The Atlas highlights the importance
of commodities for primary agricultural production in African countries. It
enhances the understanding of national policy makers in dryland Least
Developed Countries (LDCs), development partners and other stakeholders on
the possibilities and potential opportunities to achieve poverty reduction
through environmentally sustainable and economically profitable commodity

UNCCD Releases Draft Water Policy Advocacy Framework
In an effort to enhance the role of water resources in sustaining the
natural ecosystems and human well being in the context of the UNCCD, the
secretariat has prepared a draft UNCCD Water Policy Advocacy Framework. The
secretariat welcomes feedback and comments on the draft. The draft will
also be discussed at a COP9 side event. For more information visit:

World Day to Combat Desertification
Reports on events from around the world held in observance of the World Day
to Combat Desertification continue flowing in. Since the event on June 17,
approximately 50 reports have been sent by UNCCD National Focal Points,
