Drought threatens more than 400,000 in China
NANCHANG, CHINA — Continued drought conditions are threatening the drinking water supply of nearly 420,000 people in southeast China’s Jiangxi Province, according to an October 26 report from China’s official news agency, Xinhua.
According to the Xinhau story, the Jiangxi provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters said latest statistics showed 417,000 people in Jiujiang, Yichun, Ji’an and elsewhere were facing the shortage, while the low water levels in Ganjiang River threatened supplies for some cities and caused a traffic jam in the river.
The headquarters attributed the drought since late August to high temperature and lack of rain. In October, rainfall has been 90 percent less than average, the story said.
Drought relief headquarters estimated the drought would continue through November 20 because of high temperature and lack of rain.
Some local governments within the province were said to be drilling wells to ensure drinking water supplies.
