THE WEALTH OF AFRICA: SECURING HUMAN WELL-BEING IN A RESOURCE CONSTRAINED WORLD

Many low-income countries have an abundance of natural resources, yet their populations often suffer first and most tragically when humanity’s demand on nature exceeds what nature can renewably provide. Protecting the environment has often been considered a luxury when it comes to achieving human development goals. Yet, as we are seeing more clearly than ever today with such crises as food shortages, resource-related conflict and instability, and the devastating effects of climate change, it has become apparent that maintaining healthy ecological assets is essential to securing basic human well-being.

This Webinar will deal with the issue: how can we meet Millennium Development Goals to reduce poverty, hunger and disease while protecting Africa©ˆs ecological assets? It will focus on how to advance human development that works with, rather than against, the Earth’s ecological budget constraints. Panelists will include representatives of Kofi Annan©ˆs African Progress Foundation, the African Development Bank, UNIDO, and OECD, in conversation with Global Footprint Network President Mathis Wackernagel.
