Intensive process of fertile lands desertification continues in Azerbaijan

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Huseyngulu Baghirov believes that the main cause of landslides in Azerbaijan is the desertification of fertile lands.
Huseyngulu Baghirov told journalists that an intensive process of desertification of fertile lands continues in Azerbaijan due to intensive development of cattle breeding.
“Cattle breeding uses large areas of land used for grazing and therefore trees are being cut. Furthermore, cows, sheep, eating grass, do not allow the vegetation to put too deep in the ground. Thus, heavy rains are eroding soils.
This causes occasional landslides “, he said.
In addition, the minister noted that the formation of landslides is also influenced by global climate change in the world, and in particular in Azerbaijan, as well as construction of facilities without regard to the geological features of different areas
According to the minister, the landslides in Absheron mainly occur in areas of dense residence and intensive construction.
