June 17 marked the United Nation’s World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.  It draws the attention of policy makers and the general public to the dangers of desertification, land degradation and drought around the world. As 2011 has been marked the International Year of Forests, the focus of this special day was on the forests of the dryland areas of the world, under the motto “Forests Keep Drylands Working.”

The threats that desertification, land degradation and drought bring are multi-fold, from undermining food production, economic activity and access to water, among other regional problems. In some areas of the world, people have to leave their homes and land, bringing regional and national security problems and extended conflicts. CONAF, the national forest service, announced that Chile will culminate World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought celebrations on June 22, highlighting urban forestation program events in the Illapel commune of the Coquimbo Region.

A seminar organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP, “Successful and innovative projects in the fight against desertification in South America,” is being held June 21 and 22 at the auditorium of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s regional office in Santiago. This seminar forms part of a community environmental recuperation program to combat desertification, a joint initiative by the UN and European Union. In the last four years, this initiative has realized 62 projects throughout Chile.
