Africa pulls ahead

As global economic conditions worsened over the course of 2011, Sub-Saharan Africa emerged as the fastest-growing region in the world. Will there be a repeat performance in 2012? At the outset, the year ahead holds major uncertainties. Many African countries are vulnerable to market contagion from Europe or face a high risk of social unrest, and few are well-equipped to counteract the effects of further economic shocks. Still, my team of Africa analysts and I expect the region to stay at the head of the pack in 2012 (along with Asia).
