Qatar-China: 12.6-billion-dollar oil project

A series of agreements were concluded between China and Qatar during yesterday’s visit by China’s Prime Minster Wen Jiabao to the Emirate. The most important of these would appear to be the one signed between Qatar Petroleum, Shell and China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) regarding a 12.6-billion-dollar project for a refinery and a petro-chemical complex in eastern China.

The project involves the construction of a refinery that would eventually be capable of producing 400,000 barrels a day and a total of 1.2 million tonnes of ethylene per year.

Among the other agreements concluded during the visit by the Chinese premier to Qatar is the setting up of a mixed committee and an understanding over the fight against desertification and the protection of fauna.
