Keep soil healthy, farmers told

Manila, Philippines – The Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) has urged farmers and the people to battle desertification, land degradation, and drought.
BSWM Executive Director Dr. Silvino Tejada issued the plea as the World Day to Combat Desertification approaches and the country is duty-bound to abide by its commitment to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Tejada said healthy soil is the key to securing water, energy, and building resilience to climate change, particularly in the Philippines, which is vulnerable to aberrant weather brought about by the La Nina and El Nino weather phenomenas.
He said the theme for this year’s UNCCD is “Healthy Soils Sustain Your Life: Let’s Go Land-degradation Neutral.”
