Desertification at the center of discussion

On the morning of July 10th 2013 there took place in Caux a plenary session entitled “Grounding peace and stability : especially in the Sahel”. It was chaired by Martin Frick, Ambassador, German representative to the UN and international organizations in Germany. The Sahel region was discussed in great detail, and ways to combat desertification in this very arid region were brought forward. Niger and Chad were also used as examples of arid regions, and it was pointed out that today, over 150 million people live in arid regions, and are at risk of being affected by land degradation. Approaches such as reforestation and efficient collection and storage of rainwater where brought forward as successful solutions at combating desertification and land degradation.
