Dr. Bukhar Hassan, the Director, Drought and Desertification Amelioration, Federal Ministry of Environment, on Tuesday called for the use of modern technology to detect drought and desertification pattern in the country.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday, Hassan noted that since drought and desertification were global phenomena, their occurrences could be detected by the use of modern technology.

“First of all, challenges of desertification are not local issues; they are global issues. Most of the continents suffer from one form of desertification or the other.

“The general consensus is that we cannot combat desertification in isolation since the issue at stake is not a local issue.

“And in Nigeria, since 1973, when the first serious drought hit the country, a lot had been done by the tiers of government.
