Policy processes around combating desertification

Luc Gnacadja

The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) speaks about the important role of knowledge exchange and information delivery to shape successful policies on combating desertification at local, national and global levels.

“Enhancing land anywhere – improving life everywhere,” – this motto reflects the UNCCD commitment to eradicate poverty and improve rural livelihoods through promoting sustainable land management. Luc Gnacadja highlights the importance of preventing desertification and land degradation for sustainable growth, and stresses that rehabilitating degraded land was much more costly than preventing degradation. Nevertheless, information not always reached the concerned governments, resulting in a lacking of policy focus on the issue of desertification and land degradation. Effective information delivery and knowledge sharing therefore was a strategic goal of the UNCCD. Luc describes the UNCCD’s knowledge management system as a tool to influence international, national and local processes and actors in adequately addressing desertification/land degradation and drought-related issues. He also shares some colorful examples of successful policy practices and provides a number of recommendations for donor organisations supporting the policies to combat desertification and land degradation.
