Desertification In The North

By: Abba Abubakar Kabara

Soil degradation resulting from gradual desertification of farmlands still remains a great threat particularly within the north-west zone. This seems to have defied solutions, just as authorities have continued to claim committing huge resources to curtail the worrisome situation.

LEADERSHIP Weekend takes a look at the magnitude of environmental hazards being posed by the devastating desert encroachment as well asits attendant social and economic consequences on the affected areas.

Findings reveal that soil erosion and degradation of vast farmlands within the North-West zone, particularly among the eleven frontline Northern states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Borno,Yobe and Gombe. Erosion is still a big challenge considering its damaging effects to the environment translating into endemic poverty, unemployment, communal violence and mass migration of cattle bearers down to a better pastoral region.
