Measures against Desertification Applied in Las Tunas

  • Written by José Armando Fernández Salazar

The creation of experimental demonstration areas on agricultural ranches and farming in protected ecosystems confirm the impact in Las Tunas of a program being developed in Cuba to counteract desertification and low soil productivity.

More than 6,800 hectares, of 9,000 scheduled for 2013, have been improved with barriers for slopes, drainage, reforestation, land leveling and amendments with natural and mineral materials.

One of the main areas involved in the program is the Naranjo sub watershed, a tributary of the Cauto River, the largest in the country, where several actions have been taken to enhance and protect its water-regulating belts.

Francisco Pérez, a specialist of the Provincial Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG), told the ACN that the province has an experimental area with very encouraging results, and from 2014 units of this kind will be created in the eight municipalities of the territory.
