NEWTON JIBUNOH: Live and let live


In all, Dr. Jibunoh has crossed the Sahara Desert three times: two solo expeditions at 29, 62 and decided to celebrate his 70th birthday in the Sahara Desert, this time driving with a five-man expedition team from Lagos to London.

Due to his unrivaled passion in creating awareness on the impact of desertification on communities bordering the Sahara desert, he founded FADE (Fight Against Des­ert Encroachment) Africa in May 2000, an international non-govern­mental organisation dedicated to fighting environmental degradation in many forms. Since his retirement from Costain West Africa, he has dedicated his entire resources to bringing to limelight the dangers of a neglected environment.

In an interview with VINCENT KALU, Dr. Jibunoh talked about his life, desert experience and not­ed that lesson life has taught him to live and let live.

You are fighting against desert encroachment in the northern part of the country; one had expected that you begin with soil erosion that is ravaging your area?
