Sand dams to transform lives in Swaziland
Swaziland is a landlocked country in southern Africa
Following on from a feasibility study supported by Excellent Development and Africa Sand Dam Foundation (ASDF) in 2013, the government of Swaziland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have decided to construct at least four sand dams in the country.
During our visit to Swaziland in September 2013, we found great potential for sand dams in the driest regions of the country, where fresh water shortages are common due to low rain fall and high temperatures. Climate change is expected to bring Swaziland even greater climatic extremes and increase aridity over the coming years. We are therefore excited to see sand dams being implemented now to help avert critical water shortages in the future.
