A question about desertification

If the definition of desertification, agreed upon within the UNCCD, is:

“Desertification – Land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas resulting from various factors, including climatic variations and human activities”,

why do we find so many texts with “to fight desertification and land degradation” in the title ?

If “desertification” IS land degradation, why do we have to fight both desertification and land degradation ?
