THE 2019 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) will be held under the theme ‘Let’s Grow the Future Together,’ looking at what progress has been made by countries and people in achieving sustainable land management.

This is according to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which has also announced that the high level global observance of this year’s WDCD will be held in Ankara (Turkey).

The WDCD is held globally on the 17 May annually and the Ankara event will also look at the broader picture of the next 25 years.

The target is to combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, droughts and floods and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world by the year 2030.

An event to celebrate the 25 years since the establishment of the UNCCD will also be held with an International Soil Congress from 17-19 May 2019. The congress will be held under the theme ‘Successful Transformation Toward Land Degradation Neutrality: Future Prospect.’

Topics to be discussed at the congress will include successful transformation of the agriculture sector through enhancing the soil, health in the food production chain and integrated planning approached for sustainable use of soil resources.
