Katsina is one of the states in Northern part of Nigeria which is facing serious threats of desertification. The situation is occasioned by over exposure of the fragile environment mostly through improper farming techniques, overgrazing by livestock and occurrence of frequent fires and drought. This ugly trend is further worsened by increase in the rate of fire wood extraction especially by communities neighboring forest reserves due to high costs of alternative sources of domestic energy such as kerosene, gas and electricity. It is a situation whose reversal calls for concerted effort by all stakeholders and intensive awareness programmes by the media especially the local media that package and produce programmes mostly in local language. The state currently has two local broadcast media (Katsina State Television, KTTV and Katsina State Radio Service) spreading information across the people. This project therefore examines the role of these local media organizations in controlling the menace of desertification in six local government areas of Kaita, Jibiya, Mashi, Baure, Mai’adua and Zango in the state.
