Climate change, desertification put a billion poor at risk

Chennai: There are one billion poor people in the world who are vulnerable to climate change, desertification, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and shortage of fossil fuels. India alone accounts for 25.93 per cent of this population and China 16.66 per cent. The remaining part of Asia and Pacific accounts for 18.30 per cent. In short, Asia is a hub where the poor, undernourished and the vulnerable live. This is followed by sub-Saharan Africa, which accounts for 23.94 per cent of the one billion. The other parts of the world are not far behind, with Latin America and the Caribbean accounting for 6.22 per cent and the North East and North Africa 4.57 per cent. [NEW DELHI] The first commercial batch of biofuel from the stalks of a new sweet sorghum hybrid has been produced this month (13 June) at a distillery in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Ethanol is produced from the sweet juice in the stalk of the sweet sorghum. The researchers responsible for the hybrid say by using sorghum, resource-poor farmers will still be able to use the sorghum grain and protect food security, while earning an additional income from selling the stalks.
