UNCCD Prepares for 3rd Scientific Conference

 

The UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has made available an ‘Impulse Report’ and a ‘Book of Abstracts’ in advance of the UNCCD 3rd Scientific Conference, which will convene from 9-12 March 2015, in Cancún, Mexico. The Conference will take place as part of the 4th special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4).

The 3rd Scientific Conference is organized around three thematic sessions that correspond to three key challenges. The first session, on the diagnosis of constraints, will explore how to characterize and understand the vulnerability and adaptive capacities of ecosystems and populations in affected regions, including regions newly susceptible to the consequences of climate change. The second session, on responses, will discuss how to build on available knowledge, success stories and lessons learnt to promote implementation of better adapted, knowledge-based practices and technologies. The third session will address new monitoring and assessment methods available to evaluate the effectiveness of identified practices and technologies, as well as their scaling up.

Presentation

The Conference will particularly focus on how to better anticipate the impact of climate change on land degradation and desertification in order to facilitate and promote appropriate adaptation. Adaptation refers to actions taken to ensure that these negative impacts are prevented or minimized, and that both people and ecosystems are equipped to withstand potential damage. Adaptation strategies involve a range of actions, including behavioural change, technical or hard engineered solutions, such as construction of sea defences or risk management, and development of disaster mitigation strategies such as the establishment of early warning systems. There is growing recognition of the roles that healthy ecosystems can play in adaptation, which are known as ecosystem-based adaptation. These so-called natural solutions are based on sustainable land and water management as well as the restoration of degraded ecosystems. These efforts require investments, partnership, and leadership at all levels, from global policy makers, to community leaders, to scientists and farmers.

Objective

The 3rd UNCCD scientific conference will be held during the 4th special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-4) of the UNCCD.

The conference will address three major challenges :

1. Diagnosis of constraints : How to best characterize and understand the vulnerability and adaptive capacities of ecosystems (in particular agro-ecosystems) and populations in affected regions, including regions newly susceptible to the consequences of climate change ?

2. Responses : How to build efficiently on available knowledge, success stories and lessons learnt to promote implementation of better adapted, knowledge-based practices and technologies ?

3. Monitoring and assessment : What are the new monitoring and assessment methods available to evaluate the effectiveness of these practices and technologies that provide improved insights on whether or how their implementation should be scaled up ?
